Last Week in Emerge

Wow guys I really should apologise for the delay in getting our info up on this page, so sorry. Hopefully what I will be able to do is remove last years information and keep it in a text file avaliable on the site for you guys to download. That way the latest update will be a bit easier to view. Any way below is the information gathered or questions asked from the last couple of weeks.

Last week we focused on John 8:1-11 which is the story of the adulterous woman brought before Jesus to be stoned for her sins. Now chapter 8 is in the section of John which is looking at his public ministrys (Cp. 2-13) and so far up to this point Jesus has:

  • Fed 5000
  • He walked on water
  • talked about how he is the bread of life, and how through him we have eternal life (which caused alot of confusion amoungst those following him)
  • people didn’t understand what Jesus was saying and left him
  • He taught at a festival and annoyed alot of the Jewish leaders at the time because they were narrow minded and only focus on the external
  • The Jewish leaders try to arrest Jesus, but the guards hear him speak and believe him (Cp 7 :45-29), and the Pharisees’ say the gaurds have been fooled by him.
  • Nicodemus comes back and says they cannot condemn Jesus if he has done nothing wrong

John Cp. 8:1-11 is sometimes not included here in John, and can be found in Luke, the reasons for this are not 100% clear, but the example of Jesus’ teahing is still very strong and appropriate.

First off we notice that when Jesus starts his teaching he sits down, possibly suggesting some kind of equality amoung those who were listening to him. The adulterous woman was brought in to trap Jesus as the Pharisees’ were trying to get Jesus to throw stones at her for her sins, but instead Jesus says that those without sin may throw the first stone and at this everyone slowly left. How amazing is it that everyone was aware that they had sinned and Jesus had demonstated that their sins were equal to that of the woman. Then Jesus the only one without sin is left with the woman and does not throw a stone, instead he says to the woman go off and stop her sinful ways.

This story is vintage Jesus (thanks for that Adam) a prime example of people being to quick to judge others without first thinking of their own sin. So some thinking food for the week, who can judge us and who are we to judge others?

Don’t forget to keep reading John, to give you a head start on our studys in emerge and at Red@6.
