For all those gramma people last night who had issues with Jesus having ’spit’ on the ground in Jn 9:6:
ἔπτυσεν
Is the Aorist tense for πτύω (ptoo’-o), meaning ‘I spit’
So It reads ‘he spat’.
NRSV does a better job at translating it into sensible English ‘he spat on the ground’, as opposed to the NIV saying ‘he spit on the ground’
Peace out
Yo
Top job last night for those who came to the combined Local Mission night at Destiny.
Wasn’t the food great?
If you would like more info on what you signed up for, or even what we are trying to achieve with the initiative, please email me.

Hey hey all! Something awesome, my intensive at college was looking at apocalypic literature on Thursday. The class went through just about everythign that our group went through and we spent ages on the seven churches. i got to know bunch of little fun facts like the greek word for Satan is Opponent. I dont know if you guys knew that already or not, but i found it interesting so i thought i would share it on here cause it’s fun.
Another concept that i was introduced to was “Seduction to spiritual adultory”. I know at first it sounds rather strange. But the longer i let the concept sink in, it started to make sense. We explored what adultory actually is: adultory is something that’s happening in the wrong place. Seduction is a process where you are being drawn in, its something that is very subtle. So as a class we explored what does it mean to stay faithful to Jesus in our fertality?? And how being faithful is a choice that we make. We ended up with a whole lot more questions than answers, so i can’t offer many answers, but i thought its something good to be thinking about. Hence me chucking it up on here! What are peoples thoughts??
Take care <
Hey all,
If you are interested, my local church is screening Jesus Christ Superstar the musical. It is on Good Friday, April 10 from 6-8PM.
Bring a plate of food to share.
The address is 842 Centre Rd, it will be shown in “The Anchor”, a green building at the back of the church, backing onto the adjoining primary school.
Thanks – Nathanael
Thanks Nat
Not sure if I’ll get there but hope it goes well.
I was thinking during our Bible study the other night about Jesus telling Peter to look after his sheep (John 21).
It’s imagery of a shepherd that has come up in John before (Jn 10).
We were wondering where the imagery/idea of the flock of sheep, who they were, God as shepherd, etc comes up in the Bible beforehand.
Ezekiel 34 came to mind.
Check it out and see what you think.
Heya
Hope Easter was splendid!
This week we’ll be hanging at Bethel for DARE – 7:30pm.
Bring your burning questions from your own Bible reading time or perhaps some Christian issue you’ve wanted to sort through for a while.
Also, read Amos for next week.
Thanks
Joel
hey! Nathanael – With the UNOH open nights you usually dont need t register! You should be fine. If its at the new Dandy office, you should be able to just rock up. No worries. Joel – How is everything with the Tassie trip going? Hows the money raising going? Any more ideas? Have you guys got a date for with we cuold have a movie night or something where we all come along and pay $10?? I reckon thats a winner! I think i could come along one Sunday. This Sunday 27th, i’m away on a spiritual retreat, so i might be able to come along next Sunday. I have to check with Danbdy church, because its apart of my Job to be there sunday mornings, but should be ok. How do you get that
“John is trying to explain to us something he says over and over again in his gospel:
Jesus is God’s son.
Jesus is from God.
Jesus is God?”
How do you figure that? How is it that you can just pick stuff like that up? Its freaking aweosme! But please explain…
Hey Foxtel.
In relation to the trip – all money almost raised.
But you’ve got a great idea (I thought of a movie night, $10 entry, with a costume theme).
I’m trying to think of some strategies for us to raise money for the church budget in general.
I think the movie night would be great to do later in the year if we manage to get all the money this week.
In regards to the Gospel of John:
Jesus is God’s son – 1:18
Jesus is from God – 1:14
Jesus is God – 1:1

This is the church we’re visiting
Cool man
At this stage tomorrow will be a casual mention of the trip, rather than a ‘Give us your money now!’ type affair
Hey Joel,
Elise and I will be there this Sunday morning, if you need us to get up. But having some other Dare people will be good too as we are also leading youth and don’t want things to get mixed up. In any case we’ll be there!
Hey
I need people to get up at the 10:30am service for the next 3 weeks to advocate the Tassie trip.
We’ll only need 2 people per week (along with myself).
Who’s up for this week?
oh never mind i found out! No im just trying to get a picture. Why is this so very complicated…
Hey all! Whats rockin? So hwo do you get a profile around here?
Hey All,
At one of the upcoming UNOH open nights, Fr Richard Rohr will be speaking. He is an awesome speaker and will definitely be worth listening to.
It is on July 24 on the theme ‘Deeper spirituality and justice’.
It is at 2/6-12 Airlie Av, Dandenong
I don’t know whether or not you need to register, but more information can be found at http://www.unoh.org/unoh-training/unoh-open-nights

Yo.
I got a question from one of our DARE people.
The question is: Where is the Holy Spirit in John1:1-2?
To answer your question:
Jn 1:1-2 doesn’t actually mention the Spirit.
But we do know that Jesus is in community/relationship with the Father.
We also learn later in John 14-17 (specifically verses like 14:26) that the Spirit is sent from the Father, just as Jesus is sent from the Father.
So even though God’s Spirit isn’t explicitly mentioned in Jn 1:1-2, He’s implied.
Jn 1:1-2 is also linked to Genesis 1.
In Gen 1 the Holy Spirit is very active in creation.
So we can look at the two accounts and conclude that God the Father, Son, and Spirit were around before anything esle was and that they were all involved in the creation of everything.
John emphasises the Word’s (Jesus’) role in creation because John is trying to explain to us something he says over and over again in his gospel:
Jesus is God’s son.
Jesus is from God.
Jesus is God.
Howdy!
Just letting you know that DARE resumes this Wednesday night, 7:30pm at Bethel.
We’re looking at the Gospel of John for the next few months.
For this week we’re looking at:
Jesus came into the world
Jn 1:1-2:11
Hope to see you there!
Joel
Hey folks
On Dec 3 we are attending the Small Group network meeting at CCD. Here is some of the blurb I got about what it’s about:
‘You are invited with your group to a Home Groups’ Celebration at CCD on
Wednesday Dec 3rd 7.30 – 9.30pm
The aim of this night is mutual encouragement and the honouring of God for the life of Home Groups in our midst.
To this end we will hear testimonies from each of the groups as to how God
has impacted members’ lives through the small group experience.
We will worship together and pray together, hear of plans for Lent next year to have an invitational season for groups parish wide doing the ‘40 Days of Love’ based on 1 Corinthians 13.’
So that’s the G-O.
Theological terms
Yo. I was thinking (while procrastinating from my essay), about the use of big theological terms. Stuff like:
Sanctification
Reconciled
Eschatology
Missiology
Ecclesiology
The reason why I was thinking about them is this:
We should always be telling people about the Gospel in clear, concise, understandable ways.
AND
The Bible is huge, really simple, fantastically complex, and never ceasing to amaze and teach us.
How do we hold these two things together?
I was at a wedding in Tasmania last month and one of the older Christian guys there said something like ‘You don’t need to go to Bible College and use big theological terms to explain the Gospel to someone.’
I agree with him. But my point is this:
There seems to be this fear of intellectualising the Bible, or even going ‘too deep’ into Scripture, when it is supposed to be a simple spiritual aid for us.
I want to say that we need to hold both of those principles that I talked about earlier:
1. Keep it simple
2. Learn more of the Bible, know it better, get a bigger picture
Theological terms (and any academic term or word) that we use are just words that sum up usually huge concepts into small bites.
For example, instead of talking about the study of the mission of God throughout the Bible in 4 sentences (way too long), we use a short word – missiology.
So words are tools. Don’t be afraid to learn more about the Bible, learn new terms, and MOST IMPORTANTLY ask when you don’t know what something means.
God bless guys
Joel
Hey
In response to people wanting to learn how to regularly read their Bible here’s a general guide to how I approach regular Bible reading:
1. Pray
– Thank God at the start of your prayer for the Bible – for what it is: the living Word of God.
Ask God to teach you what it is to be in relationship with him throughout your day. Ask God to challenge you and change you through his Spirit. Ask for new understanding.
2. Read
– I like to work through a book rather than just open up your Bible every day and randomly pick a verse. I also recommend reading chunks of the book rather than one or two verses. While there are some knock-out verses in the Bible I think you can miss the overall context of what that verse is saying by isolating it. Also, reading, say, a chapter at a time gives you a good overview of the book. In reading big chunks (of, say, 5 chapters at a time) paints a bigger picture and you’ll start to see some overarching themes.
I personally vary how I read chunks. For example, when reading a Gospel I’ll generally stick to a section of time, rather than chapters. Jesus would often teach in big chunks in reply to what someone had asked, or a miracle would proceed after teaching. By reading it roughly by its time you can enter the mood of the situation, or more accurately understand WHY something happened the way it did.
3. Reflect
– Make sure you try and achieve what you asked God to help you with at the start – to learn how to change your life in order to follow Jesus. This means finding a main point that you understood from this section of Scripture. Keeping it simplified to as few points as possible helps for application. I quite often write down my important lessons/thoughts from my reading and look over it during the day or throughout the week. I sometimes write it on my hand so I can reflect on what I’d read earlier that day.
Then, as you go about your daily life, remember what you learned that day and let it change your life.
4. Pray
– After reading your chunk of the Bible and reflecting on it make sure you talk to God about what you’ve learned, how it’s challenged you and any issues you might have with understanding it’s lesson.
Constantly ask God to help you follow the way he wants you to live. This means talking to him throughout the day.
Give the Spirit room to change you and let him challenge you according to what you’ve read.
So, I hope this has helped you somewhat. Keep in mind that this is in no way a thorough and perfect method for everyone – just an easy, summarised version of what I do. Please respond with any questions or thoughts.
Happy Bible reading folks.
Joel

Hey – If you ate dinner at Bethel on Sunday night (burritos), could you please put $4 in the Hippe Fund (ie. the VW Combi tin in my kitchen). Please ignore this if you’ve already lifted off the guitars and made your peace.
Thanks
Charlie Jacobsen of the local Salvos has asked if we have any 18+ yr olds who would be willing to assist with Red Shield collection on Saturday May 22nd for any two hour shifts between 8am & 5pm.
This would be at the intersection of Warrigal Rd & Centre D/nong Rd.
Charlie can be contacted on 9558 2045, 0408991334. He will be at the intersection all day looking after the team and supplying all needs.
Ideally he would like 8 people at the intersection at any one time. It would be great if we could supply a team for a shift or even part teams for different shifts. Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you,
Joel
